Named-Patients Program of Menkes International – NPP-Menkes

NPP-Menkes is an experimental treatment program using Elesclomol-Copper (ES-
Cu) for children with Menkes disease completely for free, launched in 2020 and
coordinated by the Menkes International.
As of January 2026, 9 children were under treatment: 7 in Spain and 2 in
Switzerland, authorized by AEMPS (Spain) and Swissmedic (Switzerland).

What does Menkes International provide?

  • Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) donated free of charge.
  • Scientific and clinical advice (through its advisory scientific body, the
  • Copperless Committee).
  • Coordination with hospitals for drug formulation.
  • Support to families.

How to access?


    1. Formal request by the physician and family to MICu


    2. Approval by the hospital Ethics Committee


    3. Authorization by the national medicines agency
